Oahu’s Best Places to Watch Sunset

IMG_7861

Every Hawaii bucket list includes an unforgettable sunset experience. There is something so special about the changing colors in the sky and the sun’s reflection on the ocean. Whether you witness mother nature’s magic from the beach, the mountains, the water or even a highrise apartment, you’re sure to be impressed by the show. Most visitors flock to Waikiki beach to watch the sun go down, so we’re here with a few of our top alternative viewpoints to make your sunset experience extra special.

Tantalus Lookout

For an elevated viewpoint head up to Puu Ualakaa State Park and catch the sun setting from Tantalus Lookout. Only 15 minutes from Waikiki, the park has picnic tables, a pavilion and a big grassy area that’s perfect for an evening picnic. You’ll see the gorgeous cityscape and watch Diamond Head illuminate as the sun descends.

Puu Ualakaa closes at 7:45pm in the summer and 6:45pm in the winter. Outside the park, there are a few pull-off spots along Tantalus Drive that many locals and visitors flock to on Friday nights to watch the fireworks.

Chinawalls

Tucked away in a quiet Hawaii Kai neighborhood, China Walls offers a tranquil cliffside oasis for sunset viewing. From this vantage point, you’ll see the sun set from behind Diamond Head, offering a stunning silhouette of this photogenic crater. China Walls is popular among locals and can be busy at sunset time (for good reason), but the wide rock face provides plenty of smooth sitting areas to watch the show.

When the swell is up, you might witness brave surfers catching waves right along the wall. In calmer months, you’ll see locals jumping into the water from the cliff’s edge. It can be difficult and dangerous climbing back up, so we recommend staying on land and keeping a safe distance from the cliff’s edge.

Lanikai Beach

Escape to the tropical paradise of Lanikai Beach for pristine white sand, clear turquoise waters and a mesmerizing sunset. Due to its east side orientation, you won’t see the sun but will get to experience vibrant cotton candy skies transforming by the minute behind the Mokulua Islands. Lanikai is not only one of the prettiest beaches in Hawaii, it’s one of the most beautiful in the world, ranking #14 in 2024

Neighborhood parking is very limited the sandy beach can be thin depending on the tides. Arrive early to get a spot!

The Entire West Coast

The sun rises in the east and sets in the west, making Oahu’s west coast the place to go for the most vibrant and dramatic sunsets. Since the leeward coast faces directly towards the setting sun, you’ll enjoy a clear and unobstructed view as the sun dips below the horizon. Plus, there are far fewer crowds and buildings to get in the way. Makaha Beach, Makuau Beach, Ko Olina Resort and Pokai Bay are some of our top west side picks.

Want to really level up your sunset game? We might be biased, but our absolute favorite sunset viewing spot is from the water! On a boat off the coast, you’ll see the setting sun over the ocean and then look back towards the shore to watch the Waianae mountains turn shades of pink and purple. It’s a 360 degree viewing experience with the added bonus of a peaceful ocean breeze and a relaxing sail across the sea. Book a sunset sail here!
