Planning Your Oahu Catamaran Sailing Trip

08.14.22 – Koolina Ocean Adventures-0142

Essential Tips for a Smooth Experience

Oahu’s west side offers ideal sailing conditions, and a catamaran cruise is an absolute must-do for visitors and residents alike. To ensure your tour is as enjoyable as possible, here are some simple tips to help you plan your excursion aboard the Holole’a Kai.

Choosing the Right Catamaran Cruise

Morning Snorkel Tour (8:30 – 11:30am)

Afternoon Snorkel Tour (1- 4pm)

You can’t go wrong with either of our 3-hour snorkel tours! If you’re an early riser and want to kick off your day on the ocean, opt for our morning tour. If you prefer to sleep in and grab some brunch before starting the day’s activities, the afternoon tour is right for you! They both offer the same incredible experience.

Before each tour, our captain looks at swell and wind conditions to identify the best snorkel sight that day. After boarding and a quick briefing, we’ll raise our sails and embark up the leeward coast. Along the way, enjoy views of the expansive Waianae mountain range and pristine west side beaches. Once we anchor, walk down our stairs to the sea, or do a cannonball into the cool clear waters. All snorkel equipment is provided and our friendly crew is there to make sure it fits properly and comfortably. Enjoy a fresh-water rinse once you come back on board, followed by a complimentary boxed lunch. Sip cocktails, beers and soft drinks as we sail back to the marina.

We offer round trip transportation for guests coming from Waikiki (additional charge).

Sunset Sail (5 – 7pm summer, 4:30 – 6:30pm winter)

If you’re looking for the best spot to watch the Oahu sunset, you have come to the right place! We’re one of the few tour companies that operate on the west side of Oahu, and have the pleasure of enjoying unobstructed sunset views over the water every evening.

We’ll sail up the coastline as we watch for wildlife such as dolphins and whales. Sip cocktails and snack on a complimentary charcutier platter, complete with a healthy mix of crackers, cheese, cured meat, fruit, nuts, sweets and a mini shrimp cocktail on the side! As the evening continues, sit back and enjoy the changing colors of the sky as the sun descends below the surface.

Please note that we sail for the full duration of our sunset tours and the boat will not anchor for swimming/snorkeling. Transportation is not offered.

Preparing for Your Trip

  • Book in advance: Especially during summer and holidays, it’s advisable to book your catamaran cruise well in advance to secure your preferred date and time. TIP: You can save 10% when you sail on a Monday! Call (808) 396-2068 to book your discounted tour.
  • Arrive early: On the day of your tour, be sure to give yourself plenty of time to park, check in and board the catamaran. Remember that traffic can be unpredictable and it may take longer than expected to get to Ko Olina Marina, especially during rush hour.
  • Wear comfortable clothing: Opt for lightweight, breathable clothing suitable for warm weather. Keep in mind that it can get windy on the water so avoid wearing any loose hats or accessories that may fly away!

Packing Essentials

  • Sunscreen: the sun’s rays are powerful in Hawaii! Bring a reef safe sunscreen and apply often. Our favorite brand is Kokua Sun Cares’ SPF 50
  • Camera: Use your phone or camera to capture the breathtaking scenery and unforgettable memories. If you’re snorkeling, consider bringing a GoPro to get footage of the incredible views from under the sea.
  • Seasickness medication: Our 53’ catamaran offers a very smooth sail, but if you’re prone to seasickness, it’s a good idea to bring medication just in case. Dramamine and Bonine are popular medications. Sea bands and ginger candies also work well for some boaters!
  • Sunglasses: Bring your sunnies to shield your eyes from the bright Hawaiian sunshine. (and to avoid being squinty in the photos!)
  • Hat: A sun hat or baseball cap will provide additional sun protection.
  • Swimwear and Towel (snorkel tour only): Wear your bathing suit and get ready to jump in! A compact microfiber towel is ideal for drying off after a swim.

Forgot something? We often have branded merch for sale during check-in including sunscreen, towels, hats, and lightweight UPF hoodies. Check out our online boutique

  • Stay hydrated: we offer unlimited water and soft drinks to keep you energized.
  • Try new things: Never been snorkeling before? No problem! We provide life preservers to keep you safe and all crew members are lifeguard certified and there to help make your experience enjoyable.
  • Be respectful of marine life: If you encounter marine animals, observe them from a distance and avoid disturbing their natural habitat.

By following these tips, you’ll be well-prepared for an unforgettable catamaran sailing adventure in Oahu. Remember to prioritize safety, respect the environment, and most importantly, have fun!
