Why West Oʻahu Is One of the Best Places to Explore by Boat
When most people think about visiting Oʻahu, they picture Waikīkī Beach, Diamond Head, and the busy streets of Honolulu. But on the island’s west side, you’ll find a very different pace of life and some of the best scenery Oʻahu has to offer.
The Waiʻanae Coast is known for its sunny weather, clear blue water, dramatic mountain views, and abundant marine life. One of the best ways to experience this part of the island is from the water.
The West Side Has Some of Oʻahu’s Best Ocean Views
The Waiʻanae Mountains stretch along the western side of Oʻahu, creating a beautiful backdrop as you travel along the coast. From land, you can appreciate the mountains and coastline, but seeing them from the ocean gives you an entirely different perspective.
As you cruise along the coast, you’ll see stretches of shoreline that aren’t easily accessible by road. On a clear day, the contrast between the deep blue Pacific, turquoise water near the reefs, and rugged mountains makes for an unforgettable view.

One popular snorkeling area is near Kahe Point, also known as Electric Beach. The warm water coming from the nearby power plant attracts marine life and contributes to the abundance of fish found in the area.
Conditions can vary from day to day, so snorkeling locations are always dependent on ocean conditions and safety. When conditions allow, getting in the water and seeing Hawaiʻi’s marine life in its natural environment is one of the highlights of exploring the west coast.
Keep an Eye Out for Marine Life
One of the biggest advantages of exploring Oʻahu by boat is that you never know what you might see.
Hawaiian green sea turtles, or honu, are commonly spotted around the island. Tropical reef fish can be seen while snorkeling, and Hawaiian spinner dolphins are sometimes seen traveling alongside the boat.
During whale season, from winter through spring, humpback whales also make their way into Hawaiian waters. Seeing a whale surface or breach in the distance is something that can turn an already great day on the water into a memorable one.
Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but that’s part of what makes being on the ocean exciting. Every trip can be a little different.

There are plenty of ways to explore the west side of Oʻahu from land, but being offshore allows you to experience the coastline from a completely different angle.
You can look back toward the Waiʻanae Mountains, watch the shoreline change as you cruise, and spend time away from the crowds. Instead of simply visiting a beach, you’re experiencing the coastline itself.
